David leaned back in his worn leather armchair, the fire crackling merrily in the hearth. The gentle glow and familiar warmth had a way of melting away any stress. He thought about the day ahead. He felt no particular urgency.

He’d done the DNA test at the insistence of his sister, out of politeness more than genuine interest. He clicked the link. A cascade of information. Distant cousins, percentages, the usual. Then, a phrase that stood out. “Biological parent.”

He took a slow sip of his whiskey, the amber liquid warming his throat. The flames danced, casting shadows on the walls. He wasn't particularly bothered. He knew who he was.
